One of the largest cities located in the Inland Empire is the city of San Bernardino. It is located at the foothills of the San Bernardino Mountains and sits in the eastern portion of the San Bernardino Valley. It is approximately 60 miles east of Los Angeles.

Major freeways connect San Bernardino with LA and Orange counties and nearby inland communities  including Riverside, Redlands, and Ontario. The Interstate 215 borders San Bernardino on the east, State Route 210 is to the North and Interstate 10 runs through the southern area. Commuters can take advantage of the freeway system or the Metro Link that runs through the IE into areas of LA and OC.

The city hosts the Route 66 Rendezvous, the National Orange Show Festival, and the Western Regional Little League Championships every year. The site of the original McDonald’s restaurant is now the Route 66 museum, and the San Bernardino Railroad and History Museum is located at the historic Santa Fe Depot.

The population in the area is quite diverse and in 2019 was over 215,700. Median household income is $67,903 and has seen a considerable growth over the last ten years. The top employers in the city are Stater Bros, County of San Bernardino, San Bernardino City Unified School District, Kohls and Barrett Business Services.

Weather in San Bernardino tends to be hot and dry in the Summer and winters that are often cooler than other IE communities with frost and cold mornings. Snow flurries, though rare, occur on occasion. The Santa Ana winds which are felt throughout the Inland Empire during the late summer and fall months, can be particularly strong in the San Bernardino area.

Public Schools in San Bernardino are overseen by the San Bernardino City Unified School District. There are 75 schools in the system and nearly 48,000 students. Cal State University San Bernardino has it’s main campus in the city and 23 campuses throughout California.
